With referenceto A. in Mr. Bickle's
minute, I hope that it will not be necessary to
defer all educational measures involving additional
expense until the outlook in South China is better.
But if there is a need for restricting expenditure
to obviously urgent measures, I agree that we should
get further information from Hong Kong about this
project.
Mr. Sollis, Director of Education, has
no doubt brought the idea with him from Malaya,
where as you know we were rushed into sanction of
the post by the persistency of Major Brown and Sir
Walford Davies. There is perhaps more to be said
for the post in Hong Kong, where there are at least two large and important schools for British children.
But the Hong Kong Government might, I think, be
reminded that music qualifications have been re-
quired in the case of several women's vacancies in
recent years, and that several women who have been
appointed have possessed these qualifications.
